ABOUT THE WORK
The Who We Once Were series catches its subjects mid-change, becoming someone they haven’t finished being. Each face is built in heavy oil, then partly buried beneath another painted self, leaving what came before visible only in fragments. Looking backwards at adolescence and forwards at the selves still to come, the series asks which version of us is still there: the one on the surface, or all those still buried underneath.
