“The room was quiet except for the sound of the sea. The plants needed water, the door was open, but there was little moving. He sat there long enough for the afternoon light to shift across the floor, watching the horizon and waiting for someone to arrive.”
The series Afternoon in Paradise begins in the suspended heat of Mallarmé’s L’Après-midi d’un faune (1876), where a faun wakes from an afternoon dream unable to tell whether the figures he desired were real or imagined: “Ai-je aimé un rêve?” Did I love a dream?
Shortlisted for the Well Hung Gallery Painting Prize, London, 2026.
